Calumet Carton Company, a well-established packaging manufacturing company located approximately 30 miles South of Chicago has an immediate opening for a Junior Structural Designer. This position provides technical services and support to the Package Design team, as well as company manufacturing and sales personnel related to folding carton design and construction, specifications and functionality. Also, creates mock-ups and prototypes, develops carton layout, and supports die department ordering and coordinating tooling.
 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Knowledgeable in computer aid design for folding cartons – either Impact or Artios.
  • Detail-oriented with an ability to prioritize work and minimize production downtime.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to read a ruler and math skills, including fractions, decimals and percentages
  • Prior experience as a package designer in a folding carton environment and/or specific training with verified competency may substitute.
  • High School diploma/equivalent is required. Associates or Bachelor’s degree in Packaging or Graphic Arts preferred.
  • Work overtime as needed.
     

Responsibilities:

  • Read instructions provided on electronic Job Ticket, use reference material provided to verify correct job is being produced.
  • Operate Kongsberg table producing die vinyls and production samples or mock-ups.
  • Develop production ready layouts
  • Work closely with graphics team exchanging digital job files.
  • Manage die database and die revisions.
  • Order cutting dies and tooling.
  • Review customer supplied designs for manufacturing compatibility.
  • Create original carton designs consistent with customer and company capabilities and expectations.
  • Perform necessary quality checks.
  • Follow safety standards and procedures.
  • Maintain system records accurately and timely.
  • Work independently and cooperatively.
  • Provide necessary electronic deliverables to various departments in the organization.
  • Ensure equipment within department is well maintained; regular P/M’s are followed.
  • Irrespective of other responsibilities, has the defined responsibility and authority to ensure compliance with all audited certifications, systems, processes and product requirements.
  • Recommend solutions to problems which may adversely affect company requirements and customer satisfaction.
  • Other duties as assigned.
